Planning your family photos and wondering what to wear? I’ve got you covered! Outfits can truly elevate your portraits — creating timeless, cohesive images that you’ll love for years. Here’s a simple style guide to help you choose looks that photograph beautifully and feel like you.

Keep It Coordinating, Not Matching
Start by choosing a color palette rather than trying to match everyone’s outfits exactly. Coordinated colors look natural and effortless, while too much matching (like all white shirts and jeans) can feel dated. Think soft neutrals, jewel tones, and complementary accents.
Color Combinations
Here are a few of my favorite color combinations that look amazing in photos:
- Neutrals with a pop: Ivory, taupe, soft gray, and dusty rose
- Jewel tones: Emerald, mustard, burgundy, navy, think rich but refined
- Earthy tones: Olive, tan, rust, soft blues, beautiful for outdoor sessions
- Soft pastels (for spring/summer): Blush, light sage, baby blue, cream
What to Avoid: overly bright primary colors (red, bright blue, neon green), bold logos, or busy graphics. These can distract and clash with natural settings.
What To Wear Per Family Member
For Moms & Daughters:
- Flowing dresses or skirts photograph beautifully.
- Light florals or soft textures like linen, lace, or cotton add dimension.
- Try a floral dress for mom or your little one, paired with simple shoes and soft accessories.
For Dads & Sons:
- Chinos or jeans with a button-down or henley shirt is a great base.
- Add subtle plaids or texture (like corduroy or knit) for visual interest.
- Layers (like a vest, sweater, or light jacket) can elevate the look.
Don’t Forget Shoes!
Avoid bright sneakers, flashy patterns, or athletic shoes. Stick to neutral-toned boots, loafers, flats, or simple sandals. Shoes should support the overall aesthetic, not distract from it.
Final Styling Tips
- Lay outfits out together before the session to see how everything flows.
- Keep comfort in mind — happy kids and parents make the best photos!
- Bring along a backup outfit for little ones just in case.
- Add texture with accessories: bows, belts, scarves, hats — just keep it simple.
